SIWES / IT placement: 8 ways to get the most out of your industrial training
Your SIWES or IT placement can be the most valuable months of your studies - or just a box you tick. Here are eight practical habits that turn industrial training into real skills and real opportunities.
The Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) - often simply called IT - is meant to bridge the gap between what you learn in class and what employers actually need. Some students come out of it with real skills, a portfolio and a job offer. Others come out with a signed logbook and not much else.
The difference is rarely the place. It is mostly the habits. Here are eight that make the difference.
1. Arrive with a goal
Learn · Question · Build
Move from using technology to building it - with Kaduna Quantum Innovations Hub.
Online courses with video lessons and certificates, SIWES / IT placement, and a free AI community for students and professionals.
Where you do your SIWES decides whether you come back with real skills or a logbook full of errands. Here are honest answers to the questions students ask most - and why KadQuantumHub is built to make your industrial training count.

Before your first day, write down one sentence: "By the end of this placement I want to be able to..." For example, "build and publish a complete website" or "set up and troubleshoot a small office network". A clear goal helps your supervisors give you the right tasks.
2. Fill your logbook every week - honestly
Do not wait until the last week to remember what you did in month one. Write a few lines at the end of each week:
what you worked on,
what you learned,
what problem you solved (and how).
On our platform the logbook is online, and supervisors review it and leave feedback every week, so nothing gets lost.
3. Ask questions early
Nobody expects you to know everything. They do expect you to ask before you waste a whole day stuck. A good question shows what you already tried: "I get this error when I submit the form. I checked the database connection and the table name. What should I look at next?"
4. Build things you can show
Certificates are good. Projects are better. Aim to finish at least one project you can show an employer - a website, an app, a network diagram, a well-designed report. Put it online or keep clear screenshots and a short write-up.
Employers rarely ask "what did your logbook say?" They ask "show me something you built."
5. Learn the tools professionals use
Use your placement to get comfortable with the everyday tools of the job: VS Code, Git and GitHub, spreadsheets, a ticketing or task board, and professional email. These "small" skills make you useful from day one in your next role.
6. Treat it like a real job
Be on time, meet deadlines, communicate when you will be late or absent, and dress for the environment. Your supervisors are a reference you will need later - and many placements turn into job offers for students who behave like professionals.
7. Connect with other trainees
You learn faster together. Join a study group, explain things to each other and share resources. Our AI Community Hub brings students from different schools together for challenges and live sessions.
8. Finish strong
In the final weeks, polish your capstone project, update your CV with the skills and tools you used, ask your supervisor for feedback, and make sure your logbook and documents are complete and signed.
